Planning
new facilities: The devil is in the details
By Christian Mitchell
Time and money -- two limiting factors that lurk in virtually every
installation or construction project. From a TV station facility to
a simple router expansion, the costs involved and the time required
for completion are essential factors in the decision, but are usually
overlooked or understated.
NAB2001:
Reality Check
By Gerald M. Walker
Finding a unifying theme for the NAB Convention this year is proving illusive.
The NAB says, "Embrace the future." That works if you attach the familiar,
"The future is now." For the first time in more than a decade, the uncertainties
are major concerns. The slowing economy in the USA as displayed daily from
Wall Street is one concern. The Japanese economy is another concern. The
European economies also are a worry.
EOM:
Where are all the women?
Broadcast Engineering commentator Paul McGoldrick wonders if you've given
any thought to why there are so few female engineers in electronics. There
are plenty of female scientists, and a large percentage of computer science
graduates are women. But in electronics, the numbers are mind-bogglingly
small.

Broadcast Engineering magazine, honoring the best products of NAB 2001.
Mutual
impedance
By John Battison, P.E.
Matters of impedance are deeply significant in radio engineering. In audio,
with lower frequencies, the actual component values are generally considerably
larger than those used in RF work, but the effects of wrong component values
are frequently more aurally apparent than similar failures in RF. In the
latter, incorrect components may affect impedance and produce catastrophic
problems, putting the station off the air.
