Clean Keying: Ultra is Serious Magic
Best DV keying yet, astonishing moves, tracking features

Serious Magic’s Ultra ($795, formerly known as Ultra Key) is a very good stand-alone chromakey creation software package, making that often-tedious process easier and the results cleaner. The real fun starts, though, when you use Ultra to combine virtual sets – complete with 3D camera moves – with your green-screen shots. This powerful software gives your work a polished look that was previously unavailable without motion control cameras and a stack of editing and effects paraphernalia that would cost you more than a large house. Here’s our review.

Matrox RT.X100 Xtreme Pro Suite
Premiere Pro plus Matrox hardware equals a winning combination

When we reviewed the Matrox RT.X100 DV editing system about 18 months ago, we liked what we saw. It’s a graceful blend of hardware power combined with host processing that makes digital video editing a nearly all-real-time, all-the-time proposition. Since then, Matrox has enhanced the feature set of its formidable DV editing system, and made the crucial leap to Adobe Premiere Pro as well. We took the new system out for a test drive and ended up liking the RT.X100 Xtreme Pro even more than its predecessor. Here’s our review.

HD’s Growing, But How Fast?
It’s been a formative year for HDTV. While broadcasters struggle with implementation, Cablevision blasted out of the gate in October with a new DBS package, delivering 21 channels all in high-def. At the high end, HD has gained acceptance both as a mastering format for episodic TV and some video- and 16mm-originated features and as an acquisition format for sitcoms. We are in an awkward phase in the lifespan of the technology, the Mill Valley-based research company Trendwatch indicates.

Forecast 2004
Technology That Will Change the Way You Do Business

While the news in 2003 was dominated by stories of downsizing or even capsizing in the turbulent waters of a recessed market, technologies in the production and post fields kept hitting high notes. It was clear that innovation and quick productization would seriously change the way producers work. You had only to look at the significant developments in everything from ENG and electronic cinematography to new scanners and HD compression cards for PCs.
