Hardware meets software, editors win In this exclusive interview, DMN’s Charlie White talks with Sony officials about the acquisition of Sonic Foundry and the implications of blending the hardware prowess of Sony with software applications such as Vegas, Sound Forge and Acid. Bob Ott, vice president of professional audio and video products for Sony Electronics Broadcast and Production Systems Division, and Paul Foschino, national marketing manager for the Sony Media Software group of Sony Pictures Digital, talk about the present and future of the former Sonic Foundry’s software products as they become part of the Sony product line, and reveal tantalizing clues as to what’s in store for these powerhouse applications. ![]() On pro audio trends and the Pro Tools product family With his background as a musician and producer, Dave Lebolt clearly brings a user's perspective to his job running Digidesign, developer of the pro audio industry’s dominant DAW system. He's been a hot session keyboard player whose career took him on tour with David Bowie and other major artists. After that, he was a partner in a New York music production house, where he first encountered Digidesign’s Sound Tools editing software, which later evolved into Pro Tools. It was his involvement during that time as a beta tester for Sound Tools that led him to join Digidesign. ![]() After Effects and Photoshop team up to smack down the mostest boringest of visuals Every once in a while, some of us are called upon to perform a task so heinous, so unmentionable, so undeniably hideous that the very thought of it is generally enough to send even the atheists amongst us fleeing to the nearest place of worship to pray for our very souls. The task, of course, is to somehow make the average, ordinary screen capture somehow look like the most exciting bit of animation that has ever existed. But never fear. Here's one way to dress it all up, with Photoshop and After Effects as our instruments of salvation. Someone recently asked me why every time they tried splicing two pieces of audio together they kept getting clicks in their audio. They also wanted to know how to eliminate the problem. Well, the reason this happens is because most of the time the two different audio waveforms don't line up with one another at the splice point. Waveforms should be spliced at a point where they both line up with the zero-axis (a point at which no sound is occurring). CBS announced today it will broadcast its full slate of five NFL Playoff Games, culminating in the live broadcast of SUPER BOWL XXXVIII on Sunday, Feb. 1 (6:25 PM, ET), in high definition television format.
