Premiere Pro: No More Compromises
Adobe's new editing application leaves others in the dust

Adobe Premiere Pro is an all-new version of the company's popular nonlinear editing software, and it's a remarkable product that boasts interface improvements, better performance and more professional features. Offered for Windows only, the software is designed to take advantage of the hyperthreading built into the newest Intel chips, and uses the processor to eliminate much of the rendering usually required when working with video. It's a great improvement overall. Let's take an in-depth look.

What’s Wrong with This Picture?
Choosing the Post-Production Monitor That's Best for You

Buying a post-production monitor was easy 20 years ago. If color accuracy was critical, you bought a grade-A broadcast monitor. For less critical work, you settled for a lesser-grade broadcast monitor. Today, the situation is far more complex. If you’re editing your video with a computer-based system, you may have a CRT or LCD computer monitor in addition to a broadcast monitor. If you’re showing your work to a client, you may be using a plasma screen or large-format LCD monitor. And if you’re working in digital cinema, you may use some form of DLP projection. So how do you choose among the different types of display devices? And is it possible to use a single monitor for all your needs?

Also, see how workstations have increasingly become a top-of-the-list item with graphics and effects houses.

Stand-Out TV Promos
Mr. Lee and Spike TV ‘Do the Right Thing’

Women have Lifetime, WE and Oxygen, now men have Spike TV. After settling out-of-court with celebrity roadblock Spike Lee, the director’s non-namesake is now on the air. MTV Networks’ latest cable entry dedicated entirely to all things male, Spike TV will launch three original new animated series with men in mind.

Linux Matures
The Linux promise is being realized

Around the year 1998, Side Effects Software ported its Houdini 3D animation tool to an obscure OS called Linux. It was obscure in a sense that the Hollywood community knew virtually nothing about it. Named after Linus Torvalds, the chief coder and the man who freed it to the wilds of the Internet, Linux held promise that the power of the operating system would be in the hands of those who use it, rather than the company which owned it. Like SGI's IRIX, Linux is based largely on the UNIX operating system, a bulletproof OS that has more than three decades of technology behind it. But that is where the similarities stop.
