Down With Love Uses New Tricks to Channel the Retro 60s Romantic Comedies


Director Peyton Reed knew he was taking on a challenge when he read the script for the romantic comedy Down With Love. “The first page said, ‘This should look like it was made in the early ’60s, with saturated color and beautiful sets,’” he recalls. “So I immediately decided to shoot it widescreen and anamorphic, as opposed to Super 35, because I liked the way you can feel the lens curving on those old movies.”




High Definition DV Format in Development
Canon, Sharp, Sony, JVC announce basic specs for new HDV format

Canon Inc., Sharp Corporation, Sony Corporation, and Victor Company of Japan, Limited (JVC) announced a joint proposal of basic specifications for "HDV" (tentative name) format which realizes recording and playback of high-definition video on a DV cassette tape.

Adobe Excludes Premiere Pro from Mac Platform

The big news this week in the world of video is Adobe's announcement of After Effects 6.0, Premiere Pro and a brand new Adobe Video Collection. But Mac video professionals don't get to share in all the joy, as Premiere Pro launches in the form of a Windows-only application and as the Adobe Video Collection is dropped from Adobe's list of Mac offerings. So what's going on? I had a chance to speak with David Trescot, senior director for the Adobe Digital Video Group, who explained the company's rationale behind its latest moves away from the Mac.

Adobe Debuts After Effects 6.0
Standard and Pro versions gain new effects, performance improvements, OpenGL support

Adobe today announced the upcoming release of After Effects 6.0. The new version brings several new features to the company's compositing and motion graphics package, including OpenGL support, new effects and performance improvements, as well as a new pricing structure for the standard and Pro editions. It's expected to be available in August for Mac OS X and Windows.
