It’s been a year of seismic shifts in the visual effects and animation industry. The first ominous rumble was felt when visual effects providers, including Centropolis and the visual effects divisions of both Mill Film in London and Cinesite in Hollywood, closed. With the shuttering of Disney’s The Secret Lab, Sony Pictures Imageworks is the only studio-based visual effects facility left standing — if you don’t count the Alameda, CA-based ESC, bankrolled by AOL-Time Warner originally to do the effects for the Matrix films.
