Fox’s 24 Paces Itself for Real-Time Drama


When Jon Cassar, director and producer of Fox’s television series 24, was first pitched the concept of a real-time show, he recalled thinking, “Gee, that sounds kind of boring.” Visions of the main character taking a four-hour nap sprung to his mind. “Luckily,” he says, “Joel Surnow [the show’s creator and executive producer] had other ideas.” Now, 24, which has just finished its second season, with a third season in development, has quelled fears that real-time equals real-boring.

When Hollywood’s TOMBOFILM was hired to create a spot introducing a new Panasonic cell phone sporting a built-in digital camera, they weren’t required to shoot using a Panasonic HD camera as part of the deal — but it seemed appropriate. “It was the perfect marriage of technology,” says TOMBO’s executive producer, Fred Porter. “Here we are, doing a commercial about the latest technology in cell-phone imagery and messaging — and using the same client’s camera to achieve that.”
