FCC and McBroadcasting: Take The Road Not Taken
Media consolidation closes some doors while opening others

The FCC recently relaxed its rules for media ownership, so now huge broadcasting companies can grow even bigger. Where corporate giants were once allowed to own only a handful of TV stations each, now a station group can amass enough local stations to cover 45% of the United States. A company can even own two TV stations in a single market, as long as only one of them is in the top four in ratings. Why should content creators care about this? It's just a bunch of politics, right? Well, it could cost you your job, if it hasn't already.

New Workstation Technology
HP puts together solid machine featuring new 3GHz P4 "C" chip, 800MHz front-side bus

HP sent us its latest XW4100 workstation, and it's sporting some brand new technology inside. Revving under the hood is Intel's newest chip, the P4 3.0GHz C, running alongside a fast new 800MHz front-side bus. The new P4 C also uses Intel's tricky hyperthreading technology, making one chip act like two. All this comes in a pleasing package, a fine product that's the first new desktop from the newly-combined Compaq and HP. Let's take a look.

Western Digital FireWire/USB 2.0 200GB Combo Hard Drive
Drive performs as well as it looks

There are hardly any instructions included with Western Digital's 200GB 7200 RPM FireWire/USB 2.0 Combo Hard Drive ($349.99). There's a good reason for that -- there's nothing you need to know. Plug it in, and you instantly have a huge and fast external hard disk that looks great, too. Mac or PC, FireWire or USB 2.0 -- all are welcome with this jewel of a peripheral.

Dell Precision Workstation 360
Dell builds a solid entry level workstation for DCC, CAD applications

As corporations move to cut costs and bring corporate media, CAD, digital video editing, and other DCC jobs in house, computer manufacturers have taken note that many companies, especially the smaller businesses, don't have the need for the latest dual Xeon workstations.

Squeeze It
Sorenson Squeeze 3 a wonder for compression

The Sorenson Video 3 Pro Codec is probably by far the best compression codec out there. It has the ability to produce some amazing results. In the past, however, the only way to get the codec was to purchase it and then install it with your other compression software. But what if Sorenson decided to create their own compression software based around their great codec? Would the results be worth it? You bet! I recently took a look at Sorenson Squeeze 3 Compression Suite for the Mac and PC platforms and was quite impressed.
