BOXX Technologies answers the call from Hollywood: "Austin, we have a problem" "Austin, we have a problem," said film producers all over Hollywood and beyond. How could filmmakers view their footage without having to spend even more money on more film processing? They were talking to Austin, Texas-based Boxx Technologies, the company that seems to know how to get data into and out of Windows workstations faster than anyone else. Boxx answered the call for help with CineBOXX, a turnkey system that can play back 2K film images in real time, and even lets filmmakers do some rudimentary editing on these clips. It's the kind of technology that can pay for itself with one project. Digital Media Net took a sneak peek at the system in Hollywood. ![]() By Beth Marchant, Steven Klapow and Rock Stamberg Illustration by Steve Vance What tools do producers really want to see at NAB this year? We take an inside look at what's at the top of your wish lists and follow with a complete list of new products slated for release at or after the show.
![]() One In Three (31%) Stations Say They Broadcast Digital TV Now In this weekly quick feature, TrendWatch founding partner Jim Whittington offers you interesting factoids based on market research from the broadcast and graphics industries. This week, see how many TV stations are actually broadcasting DTV now. Is this good news? If a picture paints a thousand words, can you then imagine what kind of message can be delivered in a video clip? The rapid introduction of new technologies and the global glut of bandwidth are opening up totally new avenues which enable an effective use of the Internet as the crucial medium to provide visualized information to a massive audience. Indeed, the commercial attraction of the Internet will finally become visible and commercially tangible. ![]() It could be worse -- or better By popular demand, it's time to take a look at the flip side of The World's Worst Editor. My last column looked at our hapless hacker -- I called him Ed -- a digital video editor who didn't know if he was on foot or on horseback. I asked you, readers, to regale us with tales of the other, even darker side of the edit suite: the Client From Hell. Wow, did I hear some whoppers! Let's just hope that these clueless clients don't ever find themselves in the same edit suite with Ed. Someone could put an eye out, or, I don't know, something could just explode. But, as I mentioned in that same column: This is my client. He smells bad. He has money. I like him. We're Looking for DMN Forum Champions! We are working on on adding new leaders to the DMN Forum's host panel to help champion our forums.
