DRU-500A covers all the bases with DVD-everything If you're trying to determine which writable DVD drive is for you, your quandary is now over. Sony has decided to cover all the bases with its DRU-500A ($340 street) DVD burner, supporting just about every DVD writable format in existence. We installed this internal drive and burned a stack of DVDs with it, and were delighted with the results. Here's our review.
![]() With broadband now in nearly 20 million U.S. homes, movie and recording studios are starting to follow the credo of the e-commerce industry in the late 90s: “Cut out the middleman.” ![]() Film & Video takes a tour of some of the facilities actively engaged in leading the digital intermediate revolution. Digital intermediate, aka digital film mastering, is a much used and confused term. Some say it was coined over 10 years ago to describe nascent Kodak Cineon and Quantel Domino systems that scanned in film and enabled digital effects work. The more recent usage typically refers to the process of scanning and color correcting an entire feature film in the computer. Though digital intermediate — or digital film mastering, as some prefer — varies in use, most industry insiders agree it is specific to the digital color grading (and other digital) manipulation) of a feature-length project filmed out for theatrical release. Whatever you call it, the process is gaining momentum, with a more than five-fold increase from 2001’s four films (Josie and the Pussycats, Conspiracy, Amelie and Lord of the Rings) to 23 plus in 2002.
