The Great DV Shootout 2003
Matrox RT.X100, Canopus DVStorm2, Pinnacle Pro-ONE RTDV face off

By popular demand, here's the first published shootout between the three hottest DV products on the market today, the RT.X100 from Matrox, DVStorm2 Plus from Canopus and Pinnacle's Pro-ONE RTDV. In our unique format, a representative from each company makes comments extolling their product's virtues while criticizing their competitors, and then DMN's referee Charlie White offers his opinion in response to each comment after testing the systems for weeks on end. Here's where you can find out what's really happening with all these great systems, all in one place.

HD or not HD
How should the stock footage industry deal with the growing demand for high def? That is the question.

The picturesque town of Pray, Montana, would not appear to be a likely home for one of the country’s busiest HD upconversion suites, but that’s where Al Giddings has built a $500,000 facility centered on two Teranex Xantus video processing platforms. The machines have been busy for a year and a half and are about one-third of the way through their task of converting 25,000 scenes to high-def.

Morality in Media Interviews FCC Commissioner Michael J. Copps
Copps:Copps cites 'Widespread popular revulsion' with TV programming; indecency standard should be revisited
On the morning following November's Victoria's Secret Fashion Show on CBS Television, which aroused the ire of some conservative Americans, Federal Communications Commissioner Michael J. Copps issued a one-page statement calling for a "re-examination of the FCC's indecency standard." To give the commissioner the opportunity to expand on his statement, Morality in Media's Patrick McGrath spoke with Copps on 4 December. Morality in Media is a national, not-for-profit, religious organization established in 1962 to combat obscenity and uphold decency standards in the media.

SMPTE Goes Hollywood
Cinematography, Digital Intermediates Are Important Topics at Confab

A day of sessions with the American Society of Cinematographers and International Cinematographers Guild, a series of papers on D-Cinema and digital intermediates, a D-Cinema screening and a host of developing technologies and techniques for the Hollywood filmmaker all made the 144th SMPTE Technical Conference and Exhibition (held last month in Pasadena) an important stop.

VW Drives 2K Spot Work
Directors Bureau, A52 Create Theatrical Ad
Interest in high definition and 2k work in the commercial arena has been limited, but the teams at The Directors Bureau and visual effects and design company A52 recently had the opportunity to examine some new high-resolution production techniques for Arnold Worldwide's new 2003, Beetle Convertible ad campaign for Volkswagen of America. The first of two spots in the campaign is a :60 entitled "Bubble — Teaser," which is currently airing as a theatrical release and on television. "Bubble," the follow up spot, is scheduled to debut this month. Both ads were produced in 2k.
