Looking at HD Monitors
Post Houses Zero In On This Key Component

Building out a high definition version of a telecine suite or an editing/compositing bay requires consideration of all the room’s peripherals. Crucial to the work of perfecting images is the monitor that the artist and client use to make their decisions. In the early days of HD, there were few choices and the available monitors didn’t support all HD formats. Manufacturers have responded to the growing push to HD with a new generation of monitors that make the grade for discerning postproduction facilities.

Interview: Media 100 CEO John Molinari
CEO scoffs at competitors, questions value of multi-hundred-thousand-dollar compositing systems in exclusive DMN interview

Earlier this month (November, 2002), Media 100 CEO John Molinari invited Digital Media Net's Charlie White to his company's Marlboro, Massachusetts headquarters for a one-on-one interview. The company had just introduced a new addition to its 844/X platform, the 844/Xi, which will be priced at $24,995 for the boards and software, and at $19,995 for Media 100 owners. Molinari, known as one of the most charismatic and enthusiastic CEOs in the digital video business, didn't disappoint our reporter in this wide-ranging and intense discussion about Media 100's business, its remarkable 844/X gamble, and the future of digital video editing and compositing.

Media 100 844/X: Past, Present and Future
Company Expands 844/X Platform With 844/Xi

Media 100 has been continually improving its editing and compositing engine, 844/X since its release in April of 2002. This week (11/5/02) the company announced 844/Xi ($24,995), a lower-priced version of the powerful compositor that's capable of handling two layers of real time video plus two real time key layers -- that's four streams of recursive real time compositing. This compares to the original 844/X's (now called 844/Xe) four layers of video with a total of eight streams. In part 1 of a two-part series, we take a look at what's brought Media 100 to this point, and then tour the capabilities of the new product. We'll also see what else the company has in store for its innovative software, along with the hardware underneath the hood of 844/X, which it calls the GenesisEngine. Part two is a one-on-one interview with Media 100 CEO John Molinari.
