Sony Socratto HD Compositor Dead
Tough competition in high end compositing market halts development before release

Socratto, Sony's PC-based high end HD and SD compositing system that was seen as a threat to products developed by Discreet, 5D and other compositing software developers, has been discontinued. The system, whose price was said to be between $500,000 and $750,000, was demonstrated at this year's NAB and showed promise, but the lack of customers for products at this stratospheric price point proved too much for the nascent compositing system. The product was under development by VFX, a division of Sony Corporation.

Matrox RT.X100's Installation Improvements
Is the new setup routine easier?

One of Matrox's RT.X100 DV editing system's claimed improvements is its easier installation routine. In its predecessors, the RT2000 and RT2500, many users complained about setup problems, where it was necessary to reboot the machine three times to get the thing to work. Even then, sometimes it still wouldn't function as advertised. Matrox itself called the procedure "cumbersome." Matrox says it has made great strides in civilizing the setup experience, and we wanted to test that claim. So we installed the RT.X100 on two different workstations, one using Intel's 2.53GHz P4 chip and another with dual Athlon 2000+MP processors. Here's what happened.

Face the Music
The music you choose can either make or break your production

Choosing and using music is a task that must be faced by almost every digital video editor. Even at the highest levels of film and video production, bone-headed decisions are made on a daily basis that mar otherwise first-rate productions. Why are so many inappropriate musical choices made? I think it's because many producers and editors are placing their personal preferences above careful esthetic judgment of what fits in a production and what doesn't. But that assessment is highly subjective -- it's a matter of opinion. Since this is an opinion column, here's mine.

Final Cut Pro 3.0 Quick Tip #6
Configuring your scratch disks

Ever have Final Cut Pro 3.0 crash in the middle of an edit, and you don’t know when the last auto save was performed (or even where it is located)? Wonder why you can easily locate your rendered video files, but not your audio? Ever throw your hands up in frustration and cry out in the night, "I’m mad as hell and I’m not going to take it anymore!"? Okay, maybe you haven’t gone that far, but knowing how to set up your scratch disk can save you some hassle later on.
