Real time DV-out and lots more featured in revision of RT2500
Matrox unleashed a groundbreaking successor to its RT2500 DV hardware this week, a new and greatly improved DV editor called the RT.X100. Retailing at $1099 and expected to sell on the street for around $1000, the new card brings with it a host of enhancements and improvements that make this the most significant upgrade of the RT series yet. Set to ship on July 15th, 2002, the RT.X100 represents a somewhat new direction for Matrox, with the card not only taking advantage of hardware-accelerated effects, but also harnessing the power of the CPU to assist in creation of lots of new real-time filters and effects.

The Big Move From Film to Video
Just because George Lucas uses a digital video camera, do you need to? The answer is, probably. Sooner or later everyone will be swept up by the quality and convenience of shooting digitally, not to mention the advantages for high definition television. Whether you're upgrading or going digital for the first time, here's a look at digital cameras and how they're used in productions, for both major motion pictures and lower-budget independent productions.
According to the "2002 Digital Media Facility Report" published by SCRI and Digital Media Online, video compression / encoding is now among the top five most common services (among 23 measured) offered by digital media facilities across the board--over four in ten facilities (42.8%) across all vertical markets now offer video compression / encoding.
The DV Revolution Pays Off In Many Ways
As this summer heats up, so have the real time editing wars. It seems to me like the ability to edit video with ease has arrived with an intensity that bodes well for independent video producers. At comparatively low prices, in skilled hands, video of serviceable quality can quickly and effortlessly find its way from lens to screen. Even though HD is still just around the corner, it's been looming for years, so meanwhile, we'll be getting the most out of these mature DV tools.
