HD Capabilities Coming This Winter Media 100's Director of Product Marketing Rick Keilty told Digital Media Net improvements are in the works for 844/X, the company's $66,000 PC-based real time video compositing hardware and software system, with HD capabilities coming by the winter of 2003. Keilty added that the system has been well-received so far by industry professionals. Really Real Time, with Digital I/O for Final Cut Pro Even though Pinnacle tells us its Mac OS X version of CinéWave RT is right around the corner, we couldn't resist taking a look at the Mac OS 9 version of what many say is the best way to edit with Final Cut Pro. And glory be, I wasn't disappointed at all. Even though the $14,185 bundle of hardware and software I tested isn't going to be occupying any bargain basements anytime soon, it's so versatile and powerful, I can see why pros all over are snapping this baby up. It's solid, it's quick, it's stable, and I want one. So let's take a look at this OS 9 version in part one, and in part two, we'll see the OS X version as soon as it's released. Pinnacle says that should happen sometime this summer.
![]() Company Restructures, Strata and Mezzo Delayed Autodesk VP and Discreet General Manager Paul Lypaczewski has reorganized Discreet into three divisions, one dealing with systems like Inferno, Flame, Smoke, Flint, and Fire, another division dealing with desktop products like Combustion and Cleaner, and then the 3D division, handling 3D Studio Max. Digital Media Net's Charlie White had a conversation with Lypaczewski about the reorganization, covering topics like the status of Discreet's applications under development, codenamed Strata and Mezzo (now internally called Discreet Media Architecture, or DMA), and the future of Discreet in today's uncertain technology marketplace. How to avoid pitfalls in producing and delivering Web video Delivering video over the Web isn’t new, but it is for many producers. If you’ve viewed a lot of streamed content, you’ve seen the evidence—the blurry video, the muffled audio—but did you know that some of these poor projects might have been produced by professional videographers? Part of the problem is that the rules that apply to traditional video—and are followed religiously by some producers—don’t necessarily apply to Web video. The differences between Web and traditional video start in the planning stage and continue beyond delivery. If you’re going to deliver on VHS tape, for example, you need only choose between NTSC and PAL. Producers of Web video have a number of things to consider before shooting, such as the audience’s Internet connections and media players. Fire-Breathing Turnkey DV System Fastest We've Tested So Far BOXX Technologies and Sonic Foundry have gotten together to bring you a reasonably-priced ($4000) turnkey DV editing system, where you can edit DV, composite video in real time, mix audio, create original audio compositions and output all that to whatever format you desire, including MPEG-2 for DVD production. We took it out for a test drive, revving up its dual Athlon MP 2000+ chips, and were impressed by what happens to Vegas Video 3 when you apply some serious computer power underneath.
