$85 Million Invested in CG Miniseries

Enduring creative partnerships have always been the life blood of the film and TV industries, and one of today’s classic liaisons is that which matches Robert Halmi Sr. of Hallmark Entertainment with Mike McGee of FrameStore-CFC in London. Both have their huge support armies in what stands out as a highly prolific transatlantic relationship. Their latest collaboration, the six-hour miniseries Dinotopia, airs on ABC this month. Carrying an $85-million budget, it is the team’s most ambitious CG project to date. Dinotopia was shot on 35mm, and Hallmark requested a 4:3 version for the U.S. and 16:9 for the U.K. A theatrical version is also in the works, for distribution in countries such as Australia and Japan.
