After 18 months of negotiations, a deal has been reached for the sale of DirecTV, the largest direct-to-home satellite television service in the United States, with 10.3 million subscribers. EchoStar, owner of Dish Network, will pay $26 billion for the satellite network in what would amount to a simple takeover of Hughes Electronics, owner of DirecTV.

Chris Thompson knows the mixture of exhilaration and anxiety producers feel when they consider the drastic switch to high definition. “It’s a little scary for people,” says Thompson, the president of Wexler Video, a large video equipment rental firm based in Burbank, California. “It’s one thing to be George Lucas and command Sony and Panavision to do what you need to be done. Comcast Cable Communications, Inc. today announced the launch of its HDTV services, which will give more than 1.3 million cable customers in Pennsylvania, New Jersey and Delaware access to high-definition broadcasts of ABC, NBC, CBS, HBO and Showtime in November.
